A Voice for Generations: Preserve Your Story While You Are Still Here

Almost every memory collected about a person is collected too late. Family members sit after the shiva and try to remember, how exactly did he say it? What was that recurring expression of his? What year was that trip? The story gets assembled from fragments, in the third person, out of other people's memories.

A Voice for Generations reverses the order. Instead of the family telling your story, you tell it yourself, in your own voice, while you are here to correct, add and explain.

What it actually is

It is a series of conversations with a personal interviewer. It asks, you answer, in writing, or simply by tapping the microphone. The conversations move at your pace: your childhood and the home you grew up in, the stations that shaped you, the people who matter to you, what you have learned, and what you would want your grandchildren to know (here are 50 example questions, to get a feel for the pace).

From all of this, three things are built: a written, organized life story, an album where every photo has a story, and an avatar that speaks in your style, so that there will be someone to talk to, even many years from now.

Why the voice, of all things

The voice is the first thing to be forgotten. Photos are kept, letters are kept, but the exact sound, the rhythm, what a laugh sounded like, how a question asked a thousand times sounded: these fade within a few short years, and most families discover too late that they do not have even one decent recording.

When you record your answers yourself, two things are preserved at once: the content, the story, and the voice that told it. That is exactly the difference between an archive and a presence.

How it differs from memorialization

When memorializing a person who has passed away, the system builds the persona from other people's memories, photos that were uploaded, stories that were told, WhatsApp conversations that were saved. It works, but there is always interpretation in it: everyone remembers a little differently, and there are gaps no one can fill anymore.

With A Voice for Generations there is no interpretation. The source is you. You decide what goes in, what does not, and how it is told, and the result is accurate in a way that cannot be achieved any other way.

Who it is for

  • An older person who wants to leave something for the grandchildren, and is not necessarily comfortable with technology. You can answer by voice alone, without typing a word.
  • Someone facing illness who wants to say things while they can still say them themselves, with clarity and calm.
  • A family that wants to get ahead of it: to sit with a parent or grandmother and go through the interview together, before the questions become impossible (the complete guide to preserving a life story compares every option, including the free ones).
  • Anyone who simply wants a record to remain: regardless of age or circumstance.

Who controls it

You do. The profile is private by default, you choose whom to invite to it, and anything can be corrected or deleted at any stage. There is no automatic publishing and no sharing you did not ask for. The full details are on our ethics page.

The one thing that cannot be completed later

Photos can be collected later. Dates can be reconstructed later. Even a biography can be written later. The voice, and the way a person tells their own story in their own words, cannot be reconstructed later.

That is the whole reason this product exists, and the whole reason it is worth starting it earlier than it feels comfortable to think.
