What to Do With the WhatsApp of Someone Who Passed Away: A Sensitive, Practical Guide
The short answer: first preserve, only then decide. The WhatsApp conversations of a person who passed away are sometimes the most authentic record left of them, their words, their humor, the voice messages in their voice. And they are far more fragile than they seem: a phone handed over, a line disconnected or a backup deleted can make everything vanish. This guide walks, step by step, through what to do, without rushing to decide anything else.
Step 1: Export the conversations, from your own phones
The safest and simplest way does not require access to their phone: every conversation you had with them is stored on your side too. Here is how to export:
- On Android: open the conversation ← the three dots at the top ← "More" ← "Export chat" ← choose "Include media" ← send it to yourself by email or save to Google Drive.
- On iPhone: open the conversation ← tap the name at the top ← scroll to "Export Chat" ← "Attach Media" ← save to Files or send by email.
The export creates a text file with all the messages + a media folder with the photos and voice messages. Note: in very long conversations WhatsApp exports only the most recent messages, up to 40,000 in an export without media, but only about 10,000 when media is included. So it is worth exporting both ways, without media (covers more text messages) and with media, and keeping both.
Do not forget: groups too. The family group, the friends group, that is where the jokes, the greetings and the everyday bits live, the ones that are hardest to reconstruct from memory.
Step 2: The voice messages, the real treasure
If there is one thing to take from this guide: the voice messages are worth gold. Photos, most people have; the voice, the exact sound, the breath, that "oh, come on" most families discover they do not. A ten-second voice message can be the only recording left. And if a few of them are gathered together, a few cumulative minutes of their voice, they are also the basis for voice reconstruction, if you ever want that in the future.
How to save a single voice message
The export with media saves all of them, but it is worth locating the important ones and saving them separately as well: long-press the message → share → save to Files (iPhone) or download (Android). The file is saved as OPUS or M4A, both open in any player, no conversion needed. Give the file a name that says something ("Dad, birthday blessing 2024"), and back it up in at least two places (cloud + computer).
Step 3: The phone and the line, do not rush
Two decisions worth postponing until you have finished preserving:
- Their phone: do not reset it and do not hand it over before you have verified the conversations are backed up. If you have no access to the device (a lock code), you still have all of your conversations with them, from your own phones.
- The mobile line: when a line is disconnected, the number eventually returns to the pool and passes to a new customer, who will be able to register WhatsApp on it. That does not delete your conversations, but it is an unpleasant moment when it happens by surprise. There is no need to rush to disconnect; many families keep the line active for a while, and disconnect only after everything is saved.
Step 4: What do you do with all of it afterwards?
Once everything is saved and backed up, the files can simply rest in the cloud, and that is perfectly fine too. But there are further options, when you feel ready:
- Read and remember. Some families read passages together at the shiva or at memorial services, the everyday messages bring back their inner voice more than any eulogy.
- Print a selection. Chosen conversations can become a moving chapter in a memory book.
- Turn them into a living memory. This is the part we work on: at MemoAgent, the WhatsApp export is one of the most powerful materials for building a persona that speaks in their real style because there is no record more faithful to how a person actually talked. The conversations stay private, serve only your profile, and can be deleted at any time (our commitments). This is how the process works, and this is what the result looks like. How this fits into the bigger picture, in our guide to digital memorialization.
And finally, on privacy and sensitivity
Their conversations with others also touch those people's privacy. The simple rule: what relates to you, is yours to preserve; with the rest, exercise restraint, and when in doubt, ask those closest. The goal is to keep the memory with dignity, not to open doors they would have preferred to keep closed.
FAQ
How do you save a WhatsApp conversation of a person who passed away?
From your own phone: open the conversation with them, enter the chat menu and choose "Export Chat". WhatsApp will offer to export with or without media, choose with media, and send the file to yourself by email or save it to the cloud. It is worth doing this for group chats they were active in as well.
How do you save their voice messages?
Exporting a chat with media includes the voice messages as audio files. In addition, you can save a single voice message: long-press the message, share, and save to files or send to yourself. These recordings are especially precious, they are their real voice, and it is worth backing them up in two places.
What happens to the WhatsApp account if the phone line is disconnected?
When a mobile line is disconnected, the number eventually returns to the pool and is given to a new customer, who will be able to open a WhatsApp account on it. The conversations themselves do not transfer to them (they are stored on the devices), but the picture and name may disappear and the contact box will "reset". Therefore: first export and save everything, and only then decide what to do with the line.
Is it even okay to read their messages?
A sensitive question with no single answer. Conversations they had with you, are yours just as much. Their conversations with others also touch the other side's privacy. The accepted approach: preserve what relates to you and the family, exercise restraint with the rest, and when in doubt, ask the close family members.
